Butterflies, Alter Wiener, and The Human Rights Expression Contest

Our classroom raised butterflies . We observed their growth and learned about the life cycle of butterflies and the importance of their existence to our ecosystem. We kept notes and drawings in our butterfly booklets and squealed when they emerged. Along with this we learned about the Butterfly Project. This project encouraged remembering the Holocaust by having people construct butterflies to honor the children who perished at that time. Our fabulous volunteer, Kate guided the students with background as well the art work. Beautiful butterflies hung above the ceiling in our pod. As an added bonus, we were treated to special guest speaker, Alter Wiener. Mr. Wiener is a Holocaust survivor, His words touched everyone. The students wrote heartfelt thank-yous that he appreciated.
This study as well as the Being our Own Superhero unit led us to discuss human rights. Kate again came in to support our learning by guiding the students to show their understanding through art. We entered our art piece and were guests at city hall to receive an award from Mayor Doyle. So proud of each of these kiddos.
