Today we had Dave Salesky from KATU visit our classroom. Our class enjoyed learning and listening from an expert. If you caught the 5:00 pm news you could see the attentive faces taking it all in! In his Facebook page he writes about how smart our kids are.
"Back to Sexton Mountain Elementary school in
Beaverton, for this weeks weather school lesson. I had two groups of 5th
graders this morning. With the past couple of days of heavy rain and
thunderstorms we spent a fair amount of time talking weather safety.
I gave the kids a quick formula for finding out how far you are from a
thunderstorm. Here it is... After you see a flash of lightning, count
the number of seconds until you hear thunder. Then divide by 5.
5 seconds divide by 5 = 1 mile.
These kids were smart I had to step up my Game and explain Orographic
Flow. (That's college level stuff) That's an Anabatic or upward movement
of air over a mountain slope. Wow!"
As you can read he was impressed! Our recent study about weather paid off. Kids had great questions and responses to his questions.
