Passport Club

On Tuesday, September 17 expect a handout for The Passport Club. This is required for our classroom. Our first check in date will be September 25th @ 10:30 a.m. This is a geography program the locations of continents and countries . The handout explains the details and expectations. Students are encouraged to build in study time for each check in. Volunteers are also needed to help please contact Heidi Elliott at glacierlodge@comcast.net.

Buddy Business!

The week was topped off with meeting our first grade buddies. Our class interviewed our buddies by asking them a variety questions. Their answers were delightful! We are working on our This is Your Life Cereal Project speeches. Students will need presentations that cover the speaking standards: *Organize information to support with evidence and examples to convey a clear message. *Engage the audience with use of volume, pitch, phrasing, pace and modulation; facial expressions and gestures. Maintain good eye contact when speaking. *Clarify and enhance oral presentations through the use of technical words that support clear understanding. Present with effective introductions and conclusions. *Suggested Speech length: two-five minutes. We continue to work on reading our Novel Study, It's an Adventure. Students understand the importance of managing their time and taking notes.In science we learned about the water cycle in our weather chapter. I have included the parent link in the blog for Everyday Math. Please review the family letters for each unit. The letter gives the overview, vocabulary and other helpful strategies.  In social studies we will be learning more about geography before we begin our next project, Fantasy island. Students will need to understand latitude, longitude, equator, hemispheres, prime meridian and other important terminology.

Week One Happenings!

We have completed our first week in fabulous fashion! Students learned so many things such as; multiple intelligences, having a growth mindset verses a fixed mindset, working on poetry, narrative writing, personal timeline, self portrait for the cereal project, math assessments, review, Math and Me by the numbers,the water cycle and earth and space. We also had a dance lesson and did the Wobble for Move It Friday activity. As you can see, fifth grade is an active, engaging year.

I am looking forward to meeting you and presenting information that will be helpful for your child's success on Thursday, September 12 at 6:30 p.m. for session one and 7:10 for session two. We will be meeting in Mrs. Tanksley's room for a joint paperless presentation.

I am impressed by how hard they are working in class and learning to transition and use their time. These adorable faces show that we will BE an AMAZING  class.

What kind of SMART are You?

Today we watched this video that taught us about Multiple Intelligence Theory by Dr. Howard Gardener.  We also read about these intelligences. We know that there are many different ways of being smart and we all have strengths in different areas. We will work hard this year to develop all our smarts, in the way we work and play together.  For homework tonight, you will need to take the survey on the sidebar. The survey will graph your intelligences for you. What is your strength? What is your weakness? Please bring in your graph on Friday, September 6. We will compile our data as a class.  (If you can't print the graph at home, don't worry, I'll give you some time during class). Make sure you copy the code exactly as it appears.

WORD Wednesday!

We have completed our first week of presenting our robust word to the class. The words were quite impressive! As a class we discussed the importance of expanding our vocabulary to help us strengthen our reading, writing and speaking skills. Children who acquire a substantial vocabulary are often able to think more deeply, express themselves better, and learn new things more quickly. They are also very likely to be successful not only learning to read, but also in reading at or above grade level throughout their school years. Words that are interesting can be found anywhere! We also watched an episode of Word Girl the inspiration for Word Wednesday. Here is the link for more Word Girl activities. Word Wednesday is every week as ongoing homework throughout the year.
